The Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess No Child Left Inside (NCLI) program works to get youth outdoors to connect with nature while also providing important job-training and life skills. The Dutchess NCLI program hires teenagers (age 14-19) from the City of Poughkeepsie and provides them with the training and the skills necessary to become Youth Environmental Educators in the program. The Youth Environmental Educators work with their peers and younger youth to teach them about the environment and encourage them to get outdoors. They serve as role models to the younger youth and their peers and demonstrate that learning about science and nature and getting outdoors can be fun and “cool”.
The Dutchess NCLI Youth Environmental Educators engage audiences in a variety of ways, including: after school and summer camp enrichment programs; organized outdoor recreation (e.g. hikes, nature walks, snowshoeing, canoeing, backpacking); community events; community projects (e.g. trash clean-ups) and utilizing multimedia to educate youth and the public about the environment and area watershed issues (e.g. social media, blogging, podcasts, building a website).

No Child Left Inside Pollinator Garden Project:
In 2017, the NCLI Youth Environmental Educators designed and planted a pollinator garden in Murphy Park in the City of Poughkeepsie. As part of the project, the Youth Educators put together a report on pollinators, their importance, what's happening to them and why and how pollinator gardens are beneficial. The report also details the design of the NCLI pollinator garden and provides suggestions and resources for how to plan a pollinator garden in your community.
