Joyce Tomaselli loved gardening as a child but decided to pursue a more technical path in college. She holds a BS in Math and Computer Science from Calvin College, an MS in Computer Science from Union College and an AC in Marketing Management from the Chartered Institute of Marketing in the UK. Her career at IBM started as an operating systems programmer, moved to marketing, planning and management then she became a Senior Marketing Manager for global strategic alliances. She was a speaker at many technical and sales support events around the world. In 2010, after many years as a Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge volunteer, Joyce joined Walkway Over the Hudson to create and lead its Ambassador Program. In 2010 Joyce also became a CCEDC Master Gardener Volunteer, and in 2013 became CCEDC’s Community Horticulture Educator. She and nearly 100 Master Gardener volunteers host a large plant sale each spring; design, plant and maintain display gardens at the F&HC; and teach gardening at libraries, garden clubs and community events year-round including at the Dutchess County Fair. She supports Dutchess County home gardeners by answering questions, identifying plants, and providing advice about pests and diseases. She is active with regional CCE programs especially invasive species education and Master Gardener Volunteer training. Joyce and her husband Tim have been growing orchids for nearly 40 years, enjoy ornamental gardening with perennials and have recently branched out to vegetables and fruit, despite the deer.
